New Athletic Field holds Grand Opening

The Pioneer Coal Athletics Field which took about two years to construct, was declared up and running at its Official Grand Opening held on May 26th. It's a state-of-the-art run, jump, and throw track and field facility featuring an official size 400 meter, eight lane rubberized running track. It also contains a field house with washrooms and storage and there is ample parking space.(...Continued)

Let Abilities Work Partnership society has been provided with a key for our members to the fensed in track area and efforts are being made to ramp the field house to make the facilities fully wheelchair accessible.

About 200 locals including dignataries, politicians, athletes, students, Society members and the general public gathered with emcee Susan Peters and Society Chair Pat Carty at the evening ceremony to congratulate and express appreciation to all who were and continue to be involved in the financing, construction and now its operation. The facility is located off Foster avenue in Stellarton on reclaimed land in the Pioneer Coal field.

It was built from the ground up with a great deal of technical and earthmoving equipment help from John Chisholm of Pioneer Coal, 3.5 million dollars raised by Marsha Sobey from federal and provincial government grants plus donations from various private sources, plus several tons of effort and volunteer hours contributed by members of the Pictou County Recreation and Athletics Society.
