CNIB sets up Low Vision Clinic in Pictou County

"CNIB has set up an itinerant Low Vision Clinic to serve needs in the Pictou area," said Michelle Fudge adding "and we certainly appreciate being able to use the Let Abilities Work Society's office for that purpose."

Michelle Fudge is a Low Vision Specialist with the CNIB office located in Sydney. She plans to travel and run the Low Vision Clinic about once a month from the Let Abilities Work office located in New Glasgow at the Aberdeen Professional Centre.

"CNIB is the primary source of support, information, and hope for all Canadians affected by vision loss. Low vision services include professional assessments and instruction on how to maximize residual vision with to help of magnifiers, lighting, and color contrast. Low vision aids are recommended in relation to the eye disease, the severity of the eye disease, task requirements and the response of the individual to the aid", said Fudge.

CNIB welcomes everyone and it is encouraged that people contact us as soon as vision loss is detected. CNIB also offers an eight week Adjustment to Vision Loss peer support program, independent living skills, orientation and mobility training, assistive Technology, and library services.

ASL Classes at Let Abilities Work

Nine people are participating and learning to sign in classes being conducted for those wanting to learn basic American Sign Language (ASL). These classes are being held in New Glasgow at the Let Abilities Work Partnership Society office in the Aberdeen Professional Centre.

Darrell Feit is instructing the ASL classes for which a small fee of $100 is charged. A textbook, Sign Language the Easy Way is recommended and may be purchased for an additional charge. They are open to all and run on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes -September 18, 2008 3:30 pm

Present: Cheryl Campbell, Lea Nicholas, Crystal Mann, Ralph Ferguson, Jason MacDonald, Fred Popowich, Darrell Feit, Gerald Lees, John Kyle, Kevin White, Grace Boudreau (Interpreter), Philip Fisher, Kathy Rose

Absent: Ron Levy, Kendrick Fraser, Marilyn Higgins (with regrets)

1 Meeting called to order at approximately 3:28 pm. Changes to agenda: Committee Headings, Summer Student to be added to old business instead of committee reports.

2 Treasurers Report – Ralph gave the report. (The Chair noted that a request from Ron Levy had been put forth to resolve having a new treasurer. At the end of July, the account balance was $15,500.17, with some outstanding student grant money to be received. This balance includes the Barrier Free money. - Ralph

3 Secretary’s Report – Nothing to report at this time. - Crystal

4 Correspondence – Nothing to report. - Ralph

5 Business arising from Correspondence – None

Governance - will cover operation of the board, by-laws, protocol, terms of reference, ethics, membership recruitment.

Recreation – Barrier Free -Wheelchair basket ball Wednesday evenings at NSCC, numbers are increasing, Johnnie Miles. Chair: John Kyle

Deaf and Hard of Hearing – Darrell expressed the level of frustration for getting interpretive services. APSEA has three interpreters, one full-time, two part-time. Twenty-five deaf persons in the area to interpret for, Halifax can not supply at short term notice. Certified services are preferred. Grace our new interpreter, just had a baby but has agreed to help.

Ralph reported on - Proposal for funding request for Pictou, Truro, Antigonish with NS Disabled Persons Commission through Community Services to be moved forward to October/November. Ralph was not yet in contact with Millie at Community Services who just arrived back from vacation but then has been off sick in the last couple of weeks.

Movies with Closed Caption were every 2 weeks (Empire Theatre), but it stopped recently. The theatre said they would bring it back.

Dances will go under Fundraising.

Newsletter – Ralph and Jean to put together. Committees wanting to communicate via the newsletter will need to get submissions in to Ralph by deadlines (which are to be determined).

Ad Hoc will be a task force on an as needed bases.
Finance with be taxes, audit

Other Reports:

CPN – Gerald brought up employment and shared some of the history of LAWPS. Looking to advise the province on best practices. LAWPS has the expertise in work related with disabilities. The Collaborative Partnership Network is in discussion with the provincial government and the proposal that LAWPS agreed to be included in (in July’s emergency meeting), will be presented to the Provincial Government once all reports are back and a letter is drafted. It was stated that there are no specialized services in Pictou County for disabled persons and this is an important issue needing to be addressed.

References were made with regards to Career Connections and Service Canada. As a point of interest a Community Coordinator model is not used here in Pictou County. ..Gerald


8 Old Business – a. Taxwise – The scheduling was moved forward into November. Kevin and Crystal will be and Ad Hoc committee for this educational seminar to the public.

Summer Student Report – Employment stopped one week short of the grant deadline. Matthew worked 13 out of 14 weeks. The closing BBQ was not well attended. A display marketing board which Matthew put together was presented. Overall, Ralph thought he did a fairly good job.

9 New Business
a. Formal letter to John Kyle and Jason MacDonald seeking advice on how the $10,658 donated to LAWPS could be utilized in helping persons in Pictou County living with barriers. Crystal

b. Crystal to call governance meeting to be held at 2:30 pm before next regular meeting to discuss terms of reference and AGM.

c. Events – December- International Disability Day -Crystal

d. Add to agenda, Tele Health TV network to interpret (DHA). LAWPS is not represented to them. November agenda, add how this committee functions. Cheryl would like to see one good presentation put together on Power Point for the people in the community to be made aware of the need for interpretive services and funding. Cheryl

e. No emergency response team in place when a disabled person has no food, shoes, house, etc. Cheryl

Another executive committee meeting needed on CPN as well as Ad Hoc Summer Student Committee need for the spring. Cheryl
